New Super Soft Compound:
Gives stronger adhesion with ice to sufficiently improve grip.
Dense sipes:
Give more contact with the ground, and substantial increases in grip.
Textured tread surface:
Fine raised lines increase friction with the ice surface for stronger grip.
3D pattern:
Rigid centre block for controlled changes of direction, with better control.
Low temperature compound:
Designed to remain flexible at very low temperatures, but also retain wet grip allowing the tyre to meet EU legislation for wet braking.
Triangular Buttresses:
Reinforce the outer circumferential grooves to provide lateral support as the compound is extremely soft. They also work to trap and compact snow to provide traction.

The Ice is noisier on the road than the SA2, but this may be more to do with the specific harmonics in the BMW bodywork. It's by no means difficult and after the first couple of weeks you cease to notice. The fuel economy is exactly the same as I get on summer tyres. The ride comfort is very good indeed. I bought the Q rated tyre simply because there's nowhere in the UK where you can do sustained speeds of 100 mph, legally or practically.
The Ice is an excellent performer in snow, ice, mud, water and especially off-road. My BMW X1 gets to places of which the dealer has probably never dreamed!
This is the third set of Cooper winter tyres that I have bought and on that evidence I shall certainly stay with the brand.
